How to 3D Design an Ice Tray using a 3D Modelling Software

Ice tray is a commonly used object in everyday life. While pouring water into the Ice Tray and keeping it in the Freezer, have you ever thought about how the model was made? The Ice Cubes that we get after freezing have the perfect shape, edges, and smoothness.

We are making an Ice tray in this guide. It is an easy and fun process. You can make similar objects with the help of a Mirror.

Step‌ ‌1:‌ ‌Create‌ ‌Object‌

From the 3D shapes category on the toolbar, choose plane or use the shortcut (P + A). Now set Parameters as follows: Set width to 70, Height to 70, Rotation X to 90. Click to finalize the plane.

From the modify category on the toolbar, choose Inset or use the shortcut (M + I). Set Inset amount to 15. Click to finalize the Inset.

Step‌ ‌2:‌ ‌Activate Extrusion

Now we will make the section hollow with the help of the Extrusion Tool. From the modify category on the toolbar, choose extrusion or use the shortcut (M + E). Set the extrusion amount to 40. Now we need to extrude to make the cube. Click to finalize extrusion.

Click Scale Tool on the toolbar or use the shortcut (S). Set X to 30, and Z to 30 as well. Click ‘X‘ to close the transformation panel.

Next, just deselect the region selection. Click on the highlighted region to deselect it. You can also click on the grid to deselect all regions. Click on the highlighted part of the selection cube, or use the shortcut (Ctrl + 0) to turn off region selection.

Step‌ ‌3:‌ ‌Add Thickness and Fillet

Next, we will add thicknes to the bottom to make it look like an ice cube plate. From the modify category on the toolbar, select the Add Thickness Tool or use the shortcut (M+ A). Set thickness to 8. Click to finalize added thickness.

Click to activate face selection or use the shortcut (Ctrl + 1). Click on the highlighted region to select it. You can also use Marquee selection: You can just right-click. From the modify category on the toolbar, choose Fillet or use the shortcut (M + F). Set intensity to 5, and level to 5 as well. Click to finalize the fillet.

Here we have smoothed the outer bottom of the Ice cube tray. 

Step‌ ‌4:‌ ‌Activate Edge Selection and Fillet

 Click to activate edge selection or use shortcut (Ctrl + 2). Click on the highlighted region to select it. You can also use marquee selection (right-click).

From the modify category on the toolbar, choose fillet or use the shortcut (M + F). Set intensity to 5, and level to 5 as well. Set profile offset to – 0.5. Other advanced parameters can be found in advanced settings. Click to finalize the fillet.

With the help of Fillet, we have yet again smoothened the inner bottom of the Ice cube tray.

Step‌ ‌5:‌ ‌Activate Edge Selection

From the utilities category of the toolbar, choose mirror or use the shortcut (U + I). Set create copy to true. After making the perfect Ice cube, we are going to make the same cubes by copying the previously made one. 

Click to finalize the mirror.

Step‌ ‌6:‌ ‌Activate Mirror

From the utilities category on the toolbar, choose mirror or use the shortcut (U + I). Set create copy to true. Click to finalize the mirror.

Click the highlighted part of the selection cube, or use the shortcut (Ctrl + 0) to turn off region selection. Click on mesh_4 (1) and mesh_4(2) to select it. From the utilities category on the toolbar, select merge or use the shortcut (U + E).

Here we have just merged all three ice cubes into one. This merging will help us to copy the three cubes at once. From the utilities category on the toolbar, select merge or use the shortcut (U + I). Set create copy to true. Set direction to the left. Click to finalize the mirror.

Step‌ ‌7:‌ ‌Activate Merge

Click on mesh_4 (3) to select it. From the utilities category on the toolbar, select merge or use the shortcut (U + E). Again, we have merged all the cubes into one. 

From the utilities category on the toolbar, select merge or use the shortcut (U + I). Set create copy to true. Set direction to the left. Click to finalize the mirror.

Now we have double of the previous one. 

Click on mesh_4 (4) to select it. Click on mesh_4 to deselect it. From the utilities category on the toolbar, select merge or use the shortcut (U + I). Set create copy to true. Set direction to the right. Click to finalize the mirror.

Click on mesh_4 (5) to select it. Click on mesh_4 to deselect it. From the utilities category on the toolbar, select merge or use the shortcut (U + E).

So we just made all the parts as one object. 

Step‌ ‌8:‌ ‌Activate Geom Clean

From the utilities category on the toolbar, select Geom Clean or use the shortcut (U + C). Click to finalize geom clean.

Now we have removed the duplicate objects. 

Click to activate edge selection or use the shortcut (Ctrl + 2). Click on the highlighted region to select it. You can also use marquee selection (right mouse button). From the modify category on the toolbar, select fillet or use shortcut (M + F). Set intensity to 3, and level to 10.

Click to finalize the fillet. We have smoothed the inside edges of the cubes and tray.

Step‌ ‌9:‌ ‌Activate Color

Next, choose the color with the color picker.
