How to create a 3D model of a Koala using Freehand Tools

Introduction:

In this article, we are going to 3D design the Koala using the Freehand Tool of SelfCAD. In addition to learning how to 3D model the Koala, you will also get to know how to use that tool to 3D design other various models. It enables us to make multiple patterns and designs according to our requirements. There are various 3D modeling software available that you can use to 3D design the Koala, but we preferred SelfCAD as it has a simplified interface and it's easier for anyone to get started regardless of their experience.

So, let’s get down to it! To begin with, we are going to use the Free Hand Tool for Free Hand Drawing of Koala.

In the Toolbar Menu, select the drawing tool. You can see two Freehand tools and 3D Sketch. We are going to use the Free Hand tool here. The Free Hand tool includes the following tools.

Various options of the drawing tools of SelfCAD

Brush, Line, Spline, Circle, Text, Rectangle, Ellipse, and Donut. Each tool is used for drawing particular items and has its own specialty. So basically, with the Freehand Tool, we can draw a variety of things. With each tool, we have respective parameters to set. For example, Spline includes Smoothness, Symmetry, Draw, Erase, Move Points, and many other parameters. Spline is used to draw more like circular drawings.

As the name suggests, the Freehand tool is used to draw different designs of different shapes, for example, 3D designing the Letter Illusion.

Steps for Creating the 3D designing of Koala.

We shall start by selecting the Koala Image that we want to 3D design. Next, we set the preferred shape in the Freehand Toolbar that is Spline. With Spline, we can draw circular drawings. So we keep on drawing the border and nose of the Koala. Then, with a Circular shape, we can draw the eyes and with an Ellipse shape the nose. We use the Move tool to move the nose upward or extract it from the face. The step-by-step Interactive Tutorial of Koala drawing helps you clear any doubts during the process.

Step 1: Select the Image of Koala

We will start with selecting the Reference Image and then we shall use it to import the image that we are going to use and then we shall trace around it using the Freehand tool.

Step 2: Draw with Freehand Tool

Choose the Freehand tool (F+B) and select the Spline  option (F+S). Set smoothness to 20. Set Symmetry to 20.

Draw Spline from the points.

Drawing the Koala

Keep on Drawing the parts of the Koala. Then press Esc to a hotkey; this will stop the drawing. Now set the mode to Erase. Now again, draw the spline.

Continuing to draw

Press Esc to Stop the Drawing Stroke. Then we can move with other tools.

Step 3: 3D designing the Eyes with Circle Shape.

Now Activate the Circle in the Drawing Panel itself (F+C) in order to use it to draw the eyes.

Finalize the Freehand Drawing.

We have created the basic shape that is one object.

Step 4: Hide the 3D design so we can draw others.

Now Click on the Hide button to hide the selected object (V+H). This will temporarily hide the object, giving us space to draw the other objects.

Hiding the 3D objects

We just Hid the Object. So we can keep on drawing other precise things.

Step 5: Draw the Nose of the 3D design Using the Spline tool

Choose the Freehand from Drawing Category (F+B). In this tool panel, Choose the circle (F+C).  Draw Spline from the points.

Keep on Drawing and Finalize the Freehand Drawing.

Step 6: Draw the Eyeballs of the 3D design Using Ellipse shape.

Choose the Freehand from Drawing option (F+B). From this tool panel, select the Ellipse (F+E).

Draw Ellipse from the points. Keep on drawing and Finalize the Freehand Drawing.

We are done with the Reference Image. So now click on the Remove button to Remove the Reference Image.

Step 7: Combine all the created objects.

Now click on Show Button to show the first created Object that is drawing_1.

Click on Move in the toolbar (M) to move the selected object.

In the panel, set y to 11 using the highlighted gizmo. Now Click on Rotate (R).

We just pulled out the nose.

Now select drawing_1 and drawing_2 in the left side panel.

Selection of all the drawings

We will set the Rotate Object, set x to -90. Close the Transformation Panel.

This was to make the complete object Vertical. Now click on drawing_1 to deselect it.

Deselecting the object

Step 8: Color the 3D design of the Koala.

Select the eyeball and nose objects. Click on the Color Picker button to change the color of the objects that are selected. Select the Black Color button and click on Ok to confirm the color.

We have colored the nose and eyeball. Select the objects, click on drawing_1 to select it, and Click on drawing_3, drawing_2 to deselect it. Click on the Color Picker button to change the color of the objects that are selected. Now we will color the other portion of the Koala.

Select the Grey Color button and click on Ok to confirm the color.

All right! We’ve designed the Koala. Last but not least, after coloring, you can make the object Unique with Stitch and Scoop tools.

Conclusion:

We made use of various tools to create a single 3D Design. But sometimes, using perfect tools for perfect designs makes our work easy and thorough. This is not a shortcut, though. But it’s a Skill to draw the object using necessary as well as minimum tools. You can surely draw various other items of any shape using these Freehand Tools.
