3D Designing a Chess Pawn in SelfCAD

To make any INT, you must most importantly pick a 3D modeling program to use in your undertakings. In the wake of picking the 3D design program, you would then begin learning its apparatuses and elements.

In this article, we're demonstrating how you can make a 3D design of a chess pawn in SelfCAD. We picked SelfCAD as it's more straightforward to learn, and you don't have to have experience in 3D modeling to have the option to utilize it.

Is it true that you are a beginner 3D designer? Dread not. SelfCAD is here to take care of you. How about we start with an introductory article, for example, a chess pawn!

Step 1: Select a reference image

Today we will make a chess pawn with revolve tool. First, we will insert a reference image. For that, we have to go to view and select a reference image. Then we have to add an image of a bilaterally divided 2D pawn.

Selecting the reference image

Then change the view into the top view and the projection into orthographic projection.

Step 2: Tracing the straight lines of the 2D image

Next, we will go to 3D sketch and use line command. Then set the planes into precision settings and minimum angle step.

So with these options, we can trace the edges of the image. We have to add a point at the bottom and then take the line to the topmost part of the image.

Step 3: Tracing curved lines of the 2D image

Next, we have to use a 2-point arc and uncheck the minimum angle step option. After that, click on the topmost point on the line end. Then we can insert this arc command on a specific point. Basically, we will insert it at the point where the curve ends. Then we can move the arc tool so that its edges match the 2D image.

Step 4: Completing the Tracing

Next, we will select the line tool and choose the minimum angle step option again. Then we can again start tracing the edges of the 2D image by bringing the cursor on it along with the line command. Use a 2-point arc with a curved edge and use lines for the edges that are straight. By doing so, complete the tracing of the 2D image.

Step 5: Deleting the Unwanted lines

We can use the edge selection option and delete the unwanted lines (if required).

Step 6: Revolving the Edges

To convert this into a 3D model, we need to use the revolve tool. For that, we have to go to the tools option and click on revolve. So, it will automatically revolve around a specific center point.

We have to select the revolve around the edge and then select the major axis edge, which divides the pawn into half.

Step 7: Rotating the Object

Now we will use the rotate command and rotate the object along the y-axis in 90 degrees.

Step 8: Adding smoothness to the object

Then we need to smooth the object. For that, go to modify and click on the round object. Set the smoothness settings to 3.

Then we can apply mesh to this 3D model.

Conclusion:

We have made a simple pawn in a 3D modeling software using the revolve tool. We have 3D designed it with different tools of SelfCAD. You can also utilize a similar procedure to create other 3D objects of your choice. Thus, we trust you find the instructional exercises enlightening and helpful.
