Creating a Bottle with a Cork in a 3D Design Software
Do you know you can easily turn an image into a 3D model using a 3D design software? In this tutorial, we are going to see the magic of using the Reference Image tool of SelfCAD to create 3D models with very little effort. In addition to getting to know how the reference image tool of SelfCAD works, you will also get to learn how to use other great tools like Add Thickness, Fillet, etc. After going through this article, you will also be able to use the same technique to 3D design your models from images using 3D design software.
Tag along!
Step 1: Choosing Reference Image
From the View Menu of the Toolbar, select Reference Image. Now click on Add Image to load a new image. You can select the image from your device.
If you are creating this Bottle with Cork Model, then you can take a screenshot of the final model image and use it as your reference.
Now Drag the Gizmo. Drag the Gizmo to one corner of the Reference Image. This will help to scale the image.
Close the Transformation Panel.
Step 2: Create the 3D Model
Choose 3D Sketch from the Drawing Category of the Toolbar (K) then choose Arc 2 from the Tool Panel (K+2).
Click on a point to draw the Arc. Starting from the top of the bottle.
Continue drawing from the cork to the outer edge of the bottle and to the curve shape. You can see the green line in the image below.
Step 3: Create a new 3D Model
Next, activate the line from the tool panel: Choose a line or use a shortcut (K). The side edge of the bottle has a straight line and using the line tool, we can draw this straight line. Click on the point in the arc that we have drawn. A straight line will be drawn.
Step 3: Create Another New 3D Object
Choose Arc 2 from the tool Panel K+2).
Now we will draw the arc. Click on the point on the bottle till a straight line has been drawn.
With this, we have drawn the little bottom arc then close the Panel.
Step 5: Modify the 3D object using Revolve Tool
From the toolbar, click on the Tools category and select revolve (T+V).
Click on Revolve around the Edge to choose the Edge you want to revolve. Click on Edge to choose the edges.
Set the Parameters as follows: segment to 64. Finalize Revolve.
Step 6: Activate Edge Selection
Next, we will activate the Edge Selection (Ctrl+2). Click on the region of the bottle to select it. We are then going to finalize the drawing and create the 3D model using the Fill Polygon: Choose Fill Polygon from the Tool Category of the Toolbar (T+F) then finalize the Polygon.
Select the Region on the Bottle using the marquee selection shortcut (right mouse button).
Step 7: Activate Fillet
Activate Fillet from the Modify Category (M+F). Set Intensity to 2 and level to 3 then finalize the Fillet. The 3D model will be as shown below.
Choose Smooth from the right panel. Enable the smooth button for smooth rendering. We have finally created the 3D model from the 2D image and it’s shown below.
Step 8: Activate Add Thickness
Select the Add Thickness Tool from the Modify category of the Toolbar (M+A). Here, set Thickness to 5 then finalize the Add Thickness.
Step 9: Create a Another New object
From the 3D shape category, select the Cylinder or use a shortcut (P+Y). Set the Parameters as follows: Top Radius to 20, Bottom Radius to 40, and Rotation X to 90. Finalize the Cylinder.
Next, we will change the visibility of objects:
Select Isolate from the view category or use a shortcut (V+I).
Click on the region of the just created object.
Step 10: Activate Fillet
Choose the Fillet from the Modify Category of Toolbar, choose Fillet or use a shortcut (M+F). Set level to 5. Finalize the Fillet.
Change the visibility.
Click on the show button to show the revolvedmesh_1.
From the Utilities category of the Toolbar, select Align or use a shortcut (U+A). Set Reference to revolvedMesh_1.
In parameters, set Layer to Middle, and Position to Back. With this, we have adjusted the position of the object and finally created the 3D design of a bottle together with its
Conclusion:
This is a simple way to 3D design a bottle together with a cork using 3D design software. You don’t need to have experience in 3D designing to be able to 3D design anything. All you need to do is sign up on SelfCAD and start exploring the world of 3D modeling. In case you experience difficulty in getting started, you can always check out the interactive tutorials as well the many video tutorials on YouTube to learn how to create your design. If you own a 3D printer, you can always use the in-built slicer of SelfCAD to prepare your designs for 3D printing when you are done creating your design in 3D design software.
