How to Clean Up a 3D Scan For 3D Printing

After completing a 3D scanning process, the captured data often requires cleaning to ensure accuracy and usability for further applications. This cleaning process involves removing any unwanted erors, or inconsistencies present in the scanned data, filling holes, and even smoothing the surfaces. Common issues that you need to address include missing data, surface irregularities, and even alignment errors. This step is necessary in producing a high-quality 3D model that accurately represents the scanned object.

In this article, we will learn how to clean 3D scans using SelfCAD software.

Steps to Cleaning a 3D Scan For 3D Printing in SelfCAD

We are going to review the object below to see how you can clean up a 3d scan:

On this leg model, some parts need to be cleansed for 3d printing. On the right panel, turn on the Back Face Coloring.

The colored faces need to be cleansed:

The faces are kind of incomplete. One of the ways of solving this is by filling the polygon. On the toolbar, from the Tools category, select Fill Polygons:

Tick the check mark to fill the polygons:

There you go, the polygon has been filled:

It is important to note that the case is different from flipping normals. If you flipped normals using the Flip Normals tool from the Utilities category as shown below:

Then the faces would have been as follows:

However, the problem was not the flipped normals, but there was a missing face. As you can see below, the face was hanging:

The main focus of this video was to get a nice cut on this model without the above-mentioned issues. First, from the Modify category on the toolbar, select Cut With Plane as shown below:

Click to activate the Plane Offset icon in order to snap the position of the  plane with a mouse click:

Plane Offset

Click on the position shown below to place the plane:

Click on the Save icon to save the position and rotation of the plane to use in the future:

The next step is to add another plane, that is, the Back/Front plane:

Rotate the plane, by setting the Rotate X to -10. Click on the snap icon to snap it back using the mouse click on the position shown below:

Then on the Advanced Settings, set the Split Objects and Fill Cuts to true:

Tick the check mark to finalize the operation:

Now there will be three meshes. Select the following two meshes and click isolate to isolate them for a while:

Therefore we have these two meshes which are filled separately:

Click on the Delete button to delete them. Click yes to delete them:

Activate the isolated object, and there you go, you have a clean cut:

Activate the Back Face Coloring and still, the cut is clean as shown below:

Even the other side of the cut is smooth and clean as shown below:

There you go, that is how you can clean a mesh in SelfCAD. After cleaning, you can also prepare it for 3D printing using the online slicer of SelfCAD. The video below shows how to slice files in SelfCAD.

Despite these complications, advancements in 3D scanning technology continue to address many of these challenges, making the process more accessible and reliable for various applications.

SelfCAD is perfect for cleaning up 3D scans to get them ready for printing. It is applicable for smoothing out rough spots or filling in missing details very easily as you prepare scans for 3D printing. With its user-friendly tools and intuitive interface, SelfCAD is a great choice for anyone looking to bring their scanned objects to life.
