The timeline will enable you to create and edit animation frames. The material editor is where you will develop materials and textures. Finally, the toolbox contains tools and settings that are used to create and manipulate objects. Once everything is set up, you can start creating your 3D designs.

Use Mouse/Trackpad Gestures: Numerous 3D applications are compatible with mouse and trackpad gestures. For instance, two-finger movements can be used to pan or zoom, and three-finger gestures for rotation. Familiarize yourself with these gestures to navigate more intuitively.

Try out different combinations of these controls to determine which one best fits your workflow. Check the software's ability to let you edit or produce your own navigation settings as well.

How to Navigate a 3D Workspace With SelfCAD (Overall best 3D Design Software)

In this section, we are going to look at how to navigate a 3D workspace with SelfCAD. The software offers a streamlined workflow and user-friendly tools for quick 3D designing. The following are the steps to navigate a 3D workspace in SelfCAD:

1. Launch SelfCAD 

Open SelfCAD in your web browser and log in to your account.

2. Import or Create 3D Objects

Import existing 3D objects or create new ones using SelfCAD's design tools and 3D shapes. SelfCAD offers a wide range of built-in 3D shapes, such as a cube, spheres, cylinders, cones, and Torus, among others, that you can use as a starting point or incorporate into your designs. SelfCAD also provides more complex shapes like gears, spirals, text, and various other pre-designed objects that you can incorporate into your designs.

3. Moving 3D Objects

The move tool is used to move objects around in the workspace. To use it, select the object you want to move, and click on the Move Tool icon (located on the left-hand side of the screen).

Adjust the position of the object by clicking and dragging the colored arrows representing the X, Y, and Z axes. The red arrow represents the X-axis, the green arrow represents the Y-axis, and the blue arrow represents the Z-axis. Alternatively, you can manually input precise values for translation in the "Transform" tab on the right panel.

4. Scaling 3D Objects 

The scale tool is used to resize objects in the workspace. Select the object you want to scale to use, and click on the Scale Tool icon.

Adjust the scale of the object by clicking and dragging the colored boxes at the corners of the object. You can manually input precise values for scaling in the "Transform" tab on the right panel.

5. Rotating 3D objects

The rotate tool is used to rotate 3D objects in the workspace. Choose the object you want to rotate by clicking on it to use it. Look for the Rotation Tool in the toolbar. It is usually represented by an icon that resembles a circular arrow or a rotation symbol.

Then adjust the rotation of the object by clicking and dragging the colored arcs representing the X, Y, and Z axes. The red arc represents the X-axis, the green arc represents the Y-axis, and the blue arc represents the Z-axis. As mentioned earlier, you can still input precise values for rotation in the "Transform" tab on the right panel.

6. Understanding Pivotal Points

Pivotal points refer to the anchor points on an object that serves as the reference point for any transformations (e.g., moving, rotating, scaling) applied to the object. In SelfCAD, the pivotal point is represented by a small sphere. You can change the pivotal point by selecting the object, clicking on the move, rotate, or scale tool, and then clicking on the desired pivotal point location (e.g., center, corner, edge).

For example, Select the object, then activate the Move Tool (You can use rotate or scale tool as well). Clicking the Move Tool, you will realize the position is at default: X(0),  Y(0), and Z(0). On your left side, there are Advanced settings given. To change and adjust the pivot points to your preference, use the Manual Gizmo Position option.

 Then choose where you want to position your pivot points in the choices given:

You can note that the gizmo position is at the Back Left. Using SelfCAD, it is therefore easy to understand Pivot points as a 3D artist or beginner. 

7. Taking Measurements

As a 3D modeler taking measurements, one thing to note is that the 3D workspace is infinite. That means you are the one choosing the measurement of your workspace. All measurements start from the center of the workspace, except when you have changed the pivot point in your 3D object. 

To take measurements of the 3D object:

Select your object, then click on the "Measure" tool in the toolbar.

Click on a point on the first object to start measuring. Click on a second point on the same or a different object to complete the measurement. The measurement details, including distance, angle, or area, will be displayed in the right panel or just below your workspace, as shown below:

With SelfCAD, one can measure the angles of the given 3D objects. 
 

8. Aligning Two 3D Object

In SelfCAD, you can actually align two 3D objects. You can align at the centers, edges, or faces. 3D objects can be aligned:

  • By adjusting the position of the objects manually, that is, inserting values that align well with the other object. 
  • By rotating, scaling, and moving the object to align it with the position required. 
  • By taking the measurements of the angles of the 3D objects, and aligning them. 

For example, select the object, rotate, and approximate the angle of the other object. To get the perfect alignment, when you activate the Move Tool, choose the Magnet option and then position the Gizmo at the center.

The Magnet provides an icon that will help you just snap the 3D object to the other perfectly.

9. Prevent the Deformation of 3D Objects

Sometimes when you are performing 3D operations such as scaling or moving the objects in a certain direction, they get deformed. However, there is a way one can prevent this from occurring. This is by using the Local Transformation option.

This is essentially changing the axis of your operation from using the Grid (floor) to a 3D object plane as the coordinate system. That means you can only use the Local Transformation option only by selecting a face or polygon of a 3D object. Then when you Move or Scale it, deformation will not occur.
