3D sketching tools in 3D modeling are digital techniques that enable artists and designers to create preliminary sketches and concept drawings directly in a 3D space. Unlike traditional 2D sketching, where artists draw on flat surfaces, 3D sketching tools allow for the creation and manipulation of shapes and forms in a virtual 3D environment.

Step-by-Step Guide to Using Sketching Tools In SelfCAD

SelfCAD is a great tool for 3D sketching, and it is packed with a lot of freehand drawing and sketching tools to help you create 3D sketches and later turn them into 3D models with ease. In this section, we will look at how we can use SelfCAD’s Sketching tool to create an amazing 3D model. 

Go to the toolbar on the Drawing category and select the 3D Sketch.

Activate the Line Sketch which will be used to draw the sketch. In the Plane Settings, activate the XZ plane to give you points to click while sketching:

Use the Spline Sketch to sketch a figure shown below:

Turning off the XZ plane, you will remain with the sketch made:

Then go to the Tools category and select the Fill Polygon tool:

The sketch will be as follows after clicking on the Fill Polygon tool:

Then go to the settings on the right panel isolate the Filled part and remain with the sketch:

Extrusion

Select the sketch and go to the Tools category. Choose the Extrusion tool.

Set the Extrusion > Amount to -2:

Apply and click on the Fill Polygon again:

The next step is to add the thickness to the model. On the toolbar go to Tools > Add Thickness:

Set the Thickness to 1:

Unhide the filled part of the sketch. Then go to the Tools category and select the Resolution tool. Set the Detail Level to 4.

Using the Bevel Tool

On the toolbar, go to the Tools category and select the Bevel tool. Set the Intensity Percentage to 28, the Level to 8, and the Profile Offsets to 0.3:

Click apply and the model will be as follows:

Use the Scale Tool to scale and position the sketched part:

Using the Torus to Modify the Sketch

On the 3D Shapes, select the Torus.

Set the parameters as shown below:

Then go to the Tools category and select the Bevel tool. Set the parameters as shown below and then finalize:

There you go, you have your model designed by the use of Sketch tools. You can then modify the object as you wish. For example, you can change the material by simply clicking on the Material option on the right panel:
