How to 3D Design a Realistic 3D Moon in SelfCAD
Modern classrooms are changing fast, and 3D modeling is becoming one of the best ways to teach science. Instead of just looking at a textbook, students can now build and interact with what they are learning. The Moon is a perfect example. Because of its famous craters and its history in space travel, it’s a subject that almost every student finds interesting.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to take a basic 3D moon and make it look incredibly realistic. We will walk through how to add textures and "bump maps" (the trick that makes the surface look rocky and bumpy) using software like SelfCAD.
The goal is to create a Moon model that you can either 3D print or explore on a screen. It’s a fun, hands-on way to bring science, art, and technology together in one project.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow the interactive tutorial to learn how to design it. In summary, start by launching SelfCAD and open the workspace:

Then select the Sphere from the 3D Shapes:

Tick the check mark to finalize the sphere:

Select the Materials and set the settings to Maps and set the bump category to Custom:

Click Add and select the moon object and click on it. Set the Scale to 6:

Set the Settings to Textures and set texture category to Custom:

Click Add to add an image. Click Load Image and select the moon 1 image:

Tick the check mark to finalize the moon:

Set the rendering mode to Smooth:

The moon is now ready:

This project helps students learn by doing. Instead of just reading, they build the moon themselves, which makes scientific concepts much easier to understand and remember. While they work, they build essential tech skills. Using 3D software boosts their computer confidence and prepares them for a technology-driven future.
Enjoy powerful modeling, rendering, and 3D printing tools without the steep learning curve.
