From Text Prompts to 3D Print: 3D Design a Custom SofaSet Using AI Features

SelfCAD's AI Assistant will allow you to design 3D models by simply entering what you want in a text prompt. You can describe the object you want and let AI create the initial 3D model for you, saving you the trouble of manually creating a model from separate shapes and tools.

Each of the several Model Creation Modes offered by the AI Assistant has been designed for a specific type of 3D modeling workflow. Other options to regulate the model's generation may also be offered, depending on the mode you choose.

Note: SelfCAD is constantly improving its AI features, which are experimental. It is recommended that users test the functionality and offer comments.

Design a Custom SofaSet Using SelfCAD AI Features: Step by Step Guide

In this guide, we will design a Sofaset with a pleasant and realistic appearance. The procedure will also illustrate a key idea in AI modeling: your prompt will be more accurate and helpful the more precisely you describe an object's shape, structure, materials, and details.

Step 1: Launch the 3D modeling workspace in SelfCAD

Step 2: Navigate to the toolbar's AI Modeling feature

Through a text prompt, you can describe your design needs using the AI Modeling interface. SelfCAD offers many AI generation methods based on the kind of thing you're making.

Instead of developing an organic sculpture for a sofa set, our goal is to create a realistic, structural piece of furniture with distinct shapes, proportions, and details. The AI can create a model that closely resembles your ideal sofa design with the help of a clear and detailed instruction.

Step 3: The AI Assistant window will appear when you select AI Modeling Feature.

The model creation mode will be available to you. Write a model description, and then create the model.

There are three possibilities for the Model Creation Mode selector in the AI Assistant:

  • Functional Assembly
  • Organic Model
  • Profile

Every mode is designed for a particular type of model.

Choose Functional Assembly for the creation of Designing a Custom Sofaset.

Functional Assembly is the best Model Creation Mode for creating a custom sofa set because it is intended for items composed of several distinct parts. Naturally, a sofa set is made up of various components, including the main frame, armrests, legs, seat and back cushions, and other components that must fit together properly.

Functional Assembly can be used to generate an adjustable, part-based model of the customized sofa set. It is possible to develop and alter each component separately without affecting how it interacts with the others. This facilitates the adjustment of the sofa's overall proportions, armrest design, leg type, cushion thickness, and measurements.

Step 4: Describe the Object you want to create

Describe the Sofaset detail, including its shape, size, structure, materials, components, style, and functional features.

Step 5: Write a Prompt for Designing a Custom Sofaset

Now, explain the sofa set that you want SelfCAD to design. A detailed prompt is very helpful because it informs the AI about the sofa's style, dimensions, shape, components, seating arrangement, cushions, armrests, backrest, and general design. The AI can produce the desired model more precisely if you provide a more detailed description.

You can use the following prompt, as an example:

Create a modern custom sofa set designed for a contemporary living room, with a comfortable, premium appearance and realistic proportions.

Design requirements:

  • Create a coordinated 3-piece sofa set consisting of:
  • One 3-seater sofa
  • Two single lounge chairs
  • Use a clean, modern silhouette with softly rounded corners and gently curved edges.
  • Design deep, comfortable seat cushions with realistic thickness and subtle cushioning.
  • Add separate back cushions with slight curvature for ergonomic back support.
  • Include wide, padded armrests with smooth rounded edges.
  • Add a sturdy but visually minimal frame beneath the cushions.
  • Use four short, modern tapered legs on each seating piece.
  • Add subtle seams and stitching lines to make the cushions look realistic.
  • Ensure cushions are separate components with small, realistic gaps between them.
  • Give the sofa a slightly reclined backrest angle for comfortable seating.

Prepare a Reference Image:

Using a reference image, you can improve the AI's understanding. A reference image provides additional visual information alongside your written description. However, the image shouldn't replace the prompt(The reference image here is not compulsory. The AI assistant can work with a prompt only).

Step 6: Analyzing Request

The AI will analyze your request, take into account its shape, structure, components, proportions, and overall design, and use the data to create the necessary 3D element.

Step 7: Prepare Parts

The AI will evaluate your request, determine what is needed, and prepare each component separately to produce the full 3D model.

After clicking Prepare Parts, the AI will process the analyzed request and prepare  the elements.

This is where traditional manual modeling and AI-assisted modeling diverge. Rather than making primitives right away and working with them yourself, you convey the intended design first and let AI choose the geometry.

Ask For Modification:

Once all the elements are ready, you can further refine your design using AI. If you need to change the shape, size, position, or any other aspect of an element, simply provide the AI with your instructions. It will make the requested adjustments based on your requirements, allowing you to easily fine-tune the design and achieve the desired result, as shown in the image above.

Step 8: Generate Elements

Before generating the geometry, the system displays a design overview, which contains the design concept, overall dimensions, complexity, and assembly type. After then, the model is broken down into separate parts, including the ThreeSeaterBaseFrame, ThreeSeaterLeg, and other elements unique to the design. Users can choose the elements they want to generate.

Once you have reviewed the proposed elements, use the checkboxes next to each element to pick the components you wish to add. After finalizing your choice, pick Generate Elements from the Assistant panel.

The interface is modified during this process to display each element's generation status.

As each element finishes processing, its status changes from Creating to Ready.

Step 9: Assemble Model

Once all of the elements are ready, click Assemble Model.

Assemble

The model is ready once you click Assemble Model. After that, select Preview Assembly to see your model.

Step 10: Add to Scene the model

Once you are satisfied with your model, you can add it to the SelfCAD scene,  the AI-generated sofa becomes part of your regular SelfCAD workspace, where you can continue editing it using the standard modeling tools.

This transition is important because AI Modeling doesn’t have to be the end of the workflow. Instead, it can provide the initial geometry, while SelfCAD’s conventional tools give you additional control over the final design.

Understanding the AI Modeling Workflow:

AI-assisted 3D modeling helps transform concepts into precise digital designs through a transparent and repeatable procedure. The steps involved are as follows:

Describe → Reference → Generate → Inspect → Modify → Refine.

Clearly describe the object you wish to construct at the outset, and provide references as appropriate. Examine the model's form, features, and structure when the AI has finished creating it. Use the modeling tools in SelfCAD to make changes, then modify the design until you get the desired outcome. The most important lesson is that AI serves as a design help rather than a substitute for designers. Throughout the entire process, the model is guided by your choices and input.

Conclusion

Using SelfCAD AI Modeling to design a sofa set shows how AI can simplify the early phases of 3D furniture design. Rather than starting from the beginning with the sofa's seats, cushions, backrests, and armrests, you may describe your ideal design, supply a reference image, and let AI create a preliminary model.

The capacity for improvement and iteration is the true benefit. You can give more detailed instructions and produce a better outcome if the sofa's dimensions, cushion arrangement, form, or general style need to be changed.

The AI-generated model can be added to the SelfCAD scene and edited using standard 3D modeling tools after you're happy with it.

As a result, SelfCAD AI Modeling is more than just a model creator. It becomes an interactive component of the design process, assisting you in turning a concept and reference image into a comprehensive, adaptable 3D sofa model.
