         Creating U-shaped Objects in SelfCAD

In this article, we are going to show you four ways of creating a U-shaped object in SelfCAD without any specific requirements.

  1. Drag and Drop A Cube

In this first method, you start by dragging and dropping the cube in the workspace as shown below:

After doing this, select the Top, front, and bottom faces and delete them.

Select the Round Objects tool from the Tools section. Set the smoothness settings to 5 then click Apply.

Select the Add Thickness tool from the Tools section so that we can add thickness to the model.

Set the thickness settings to 25.24 then apply.

Select Scale tool and set the X, Y, and Z settings to 150.48, 19, and 121.11 respectively as shown below.

You can add material too to the model. You can do this by clicking the material option on the left panel. In our case, we use Metal so that it can look like real metal and we are done!

Let’s proceed to the second method now

 2. Using The Cylinder

Double click on the cylinder found in the basic shapes section.

Reset the settings to Default values and change only the Arch settings to 180 then click finalize.

Using the Polygon selection tool, select the two front polygons and scale them forward as shown below.

Select the top and bottom polygons using the polygon selection tool and delete them.

Like the first method add thickness to the object using the Add thickness tool found in the tools section.

                                           

 

   3. Using FreeHand Drawing

Before using the sketching tool, we will need to import the reference image that we will be using as a guideline when drawing. Go to View section and select Reference image or you can search for it on the Find Toolbar.

Click Add Image, select your image and click Open and you will be able to import your reference image on the workspace.

You can rotate it so that it can fit our requirements.

Now it’s the time now to start drawing. And to do this, we are going to trace the reference image that we imported.

Select 3D Sketch and click Line and start tracing it as shown below.

After tracing the image, Click Finalize The Drawing and you will be done.

  4. Using 3D Sketch

In the 3D Sketch section, select FreeHand.

In the Arch Sketch section, select 2 Points Arch.

Select two points on the workspace and drag to create two arches as shown below:

Take the line drawing tool and draw the remaining sections of the U-shape. Use the green lines of the seen to guide you.

After drawing, go to Utilities then select Fill, and after filling it’s time now to extrude it to get the height.

Deselect the Mesh1 and get the Extrusion tool from the toolbar. Set the Extrusion Amount to 36 then click Apply and we are done.

You can also change the material according to your needs.

5. Using Image TO 3D Tool

This is another way you can use to create a U-Shaped object. It’s not much easier but I will show you so that you can give it a try too when creating advanced objects. Select Image to the 3D tool and select your image. Set the Amount to -13 then Finalize.

To extract the U-Shape, take a cube and scale it to cover the entire object. and make sure that the U-shape is more protruding.

Select both objects and go to Stitch and Scoop tool then Difference.

Extract the object from the image and click Apply and you will be done!
