3D Designing a Simple Dustbin Using Cylinder Shape of SelfCAD
SelfCAD is designed for all skill levels. Unlike other professional CAD software that requires weeks of learning, SelfCAD allows you to start modeling right away. The interface is clean, and the tools are easy to find and use. This project focuses on creating a dustbin using only the cylinder shape, which makes it incredibly simple. SelfCAD has a Shape Generator that lets you quickly create cylinders and modify them as needed. You can check out the interactive tutorial to learn how to design. In summary, start by launching SelfCAD and open the workspace:
On the toolbar, select the Cylinder from 3D Shapes:
Set the parameters of the cylinder and tick the check mark to finalize it:
Activate the Polygon Selection on the right side panel, and select the top polygon tool and click Delete:
Select the bottom polygon and from the Modify category select the Inset tool:
Set the Inset Amount to 5:
Select the Move tool and set Y to 6. Then activate the Scale tool and set X and Z to 80:
Click “X” to close the transformation panel. Select the Taper tool from the Deform category and set X and Z to 30:
Click “X” to close the taper panel. Activate the Edge Selection and select the edges of the object except the bottom and top edges as shown. Select Chamfer Tool from the Modify category and set the Intensity to 4:
On the Fill Settings set the Fill Corners to False:
Tick the check mark to finalize the Chamfer. Select Add Thickness tool from the Modify category and tick the check mark to finalize Add Thickness:
Activate Face Selection and click on the gear icon to open more settings. Set Loop Selection to true and use it to select the top faces as shown:
From the Modify category, select the Extrusion tool. Set the Vertex Normals to true. Tick the check mark to finalize the extrusion:
The final step is to make the object smooth. Use the Round Object tool from the Modify category and tick the check mark to finalize the operation:
The dustbin is finally ready:
Making a dustbin using only a cylinder shape in SelfCAD is an easy and useful project. It helps you learn the basics of 3D modeling while creating something you can use every day. Whether you need a small bin for your desk or a bigger one, this article has guided you step by step. After 3D modeling, you can use the in0-built online slicer of SelfCAD to slice your designs and generate the G-code to send to your 3D printer. The video below shows how to slice STL files in SelfCAD.
Enjoy powerful modeling, rendering, and 3D printing tools without the steep learning curve.
