How to 3D Model a Cowboy Hat Using SelfCAD

SelfCAD is perfect for this because it's an all-in-one software that's easy to learn, works right in your browser or on your computer, and lets you model, sculpt, and even prepare for 3D printing all in the same place. In this article, we'll guide you step by step on how to use SelfCAD to create a straightforward cowboy hat, starting with basic shapes and adding the signature wide-brim and pinched-crown details.

The Steps of Creating a Simple Cowboy Hat

You can follow the interactive tutorial to learn how to design it. In summary, start by launching SelfCAD and opening the workspace:

On the toolbar from the 3D Shapes category, select the Cylinder shape and set the parameters as follows:

Tick the check mark to finalize the cylinder. Select the Cylinder again  from the 3D Shapes and set the parameters as follows:

Select the two objects and click Stitch and Scoop and choose Union:

Tick the check mark to finalize the union. Turn on the Solid + Wireframe and activate Face selection and select the faces as shown. Select the Scale tool and set X to 45 and Z to 45:

Select Extrusion tool from the Modify category and set the Amount to -45:

Tick the check mark to finalize extrusion. Select the Scale tool and set X and Z to 35:

The next step is to create the bend effect. Select the Bend tool from the Deform category. Choose the Back/Front plane and set Y to -30:

Click “X” to close the Bend tool panel. Set the rendering mode to Solid and choose your preferred color:
