How to 3D Model a Basic Lamp in a CAD Software
In this article, we will guide you through the steps of designing a basic lamp, focusing on its main components: the base, the stand, and the shade. Along the way, you will become familiar with key tools and techniques in SelfCAD that are essential for 3D modeling. You can check out the interactive tutorial to learn how to design it.
To begin, launch SelfCAD, and open the 3D workspace:
Select Icosahedron shape from the 3D Shapes:
Set the parameters as shown and tick the check mark to finalize the shape:
Activate Capsule from the 3D Shapes:
Set the parameters of the capsule as follows and tick the check mark to finalize it:
On the toolbar, select the Shape generator from the Generators:
Finalize the shape. The next step is to add thickness. Select Add Thickness tool from the Modify category and tick the check mark to finalize the thickness:
Select Capsule again from the 3D Shapes and set the parameters as follows:
The next step is to create more copies of the mesh to create the support systems. Select the Copy Offset tool from the Tools category. Set the operation to Pivot and set the Number of Copies to 6 and click Copy to create the copies:
Click “X” to close the copy offset panel:
Click Group to group them together. Use the Copy Offset tool to make the copy of the group you made and set Y to -150 to position well:
Select the Sphere from the 3D Shapes and set the parameters as shown:
Finalize the sphere. Activate the Scale tool and set Y to 60. Click “X” to close the transformation panel:
On the Color Picker select the Yellow color for the sphere and click ok to finalize the color:
Select all the capsules and give them a black color and click ok to confirm them:
Give the base the Brown color from the color pciker and click ok to confirm the color:
Give the frame a Lavender color from the color picker:
The basic lamp is finally ready:
SelfCAD is user-friendly, making it accessible and suitable to 3D modeling beginners and professionals alike. The software offers an easy-to-use platform for creating 3D objects, and the interface is well-organized with all the necessary tools. After you make your design, you can prepare the object for 3D printing using the inbuilt slicer. Learn how to slice STL files in SelfCAD in the video below.
Enjoy powerful modeling, rendering, and 3D printing tools without the steep learning curve.
