The Basics of 3D Stencil Design: A Beginner's Guide
A 3D stencil refers to a type of stencil art that creates the illusion of three-dimensional depth and perspective. Traditional stencils are typically flat and used to reproduce a design by applying paint or ink through cut-out areas onto a surface. In contrast, 3D stencils add an extra layer of complexity by incorporating shading, layering, and other techniques to simulate depth and make the image appear three-dimensional.
To create the 3D stencil, begin by launching the SelfCAD application and create a new project.
Choose a Basic Shape
Start by selecting a basic shape that suits your stencil design. Common choices include rectangles, circles, or polygons. In this case, we are using a cube as a base. To do this, on the toolbar click on the 3D Shapes and select the Cube:
Adjust the dimensions as shown on the left panel below:
The cube formed is the base of forming the stencil:
The stencil pattern will be engraved in the cube. To do this, on the toolbar, click on the Image to 3D.
Select the pattern of your choice from the computer.

To make the model more realistic, set the Resolution to 250, Tolerance to 0.8, Amount to -8 and set Blur to 3:
Then click Finalize:
The next step is to position the leaves to the base by use of the Scale tool. On the toolbar, click on the Scale tool. When using the Scale tool, ensure you have activated the Keep Proportion option on the advanced settings.
On the Scale tool, set the X axis to 85. Then on the top panel toolbar, click on the Utilities and select the Align tool. Set the reference as the modified cube. Set the Align to the Middle so that the model is positioned at the center as shown below:
Subtract Shapes
Select the two objects. On the toolbar, select the Stitch and Scoop tool. Use the Difference option:
Then select the image we are subtracting, that is the cube:
The click apply, and there you go:
Use the Move tool and Rotate tool on the toolbar to position the model in a horizontal manner as shown below:
Add Text
We are adding the text from the computer just as we imported the Stencil pattern. O the toolbar, click on the Image to 3D and select the text as shown below:
The text cuts into the background. To prevent this, activate the Flip Background:
Use the Scale tool and Move tool to reshape and resize it as shown below;
To position it accurately, go to the Move tool on the toolbar. On the Advanced settings, activate the Magnet to snap it in its position easily:
Go to the toolbar on the Tools category and select the Copy Offset tool. Choose Pivot and make the Number of copies to 1 and click copy to apply:
Use the Rotate tool to position it as shown below:
Go to the Utilities category and select the Merge option:
Then on the Tools category, select the Magic Fix to solidify the objects:
Apply to combine all the objects. There you go, your design is ready:
